Envisioning a Place for People around Wabash Substation

We need your input to create a place in the neighborhood that everyone can be proud of.

The Wabash Substation needs to be expanded for three reasons.

Located at the intersection of Boulevard and Wabash Avenue, the Wabash Substation is a critical part of our electrical grid for the neighborhood and the city. Built in the 1960s, the substation is a piece of aging infrastructure that needs to be updated and expanded to meet the needs of the city today and for the next 40-60 years. Georgia Power has a plan for how they intend to expand. They have also set aside space in the design for the community to lean in and create the public interface - specifically to tailor the open space and wall designs.

Age

The substation was built in the 1960s. At approximately 60 years old, this substation is considered one of the oldest in Atlanta and needs to be upgraded to match modern standards.

Redundancy

The substation is located at a central point in the city and needs to support our city’s grid from a redundancy and reliability standpoint.

Growth

The substation is located in a neighborhood that is growing and evolving. This infrastructure needs to match the current situation and growth that will happen over the next 40-60 years.

To design the public interface of the substation, we need your help.

Starting in mid-December 2023 and designing through mid-year 2024, Perkins&Will has been hired to lead a community design process to develop and articulate a program and design for the public interface of the substation. This includes the walls of the substation enclosure as well as the public open spaces that exist to the western, southern, and eastern edges of the site.
